greatness

An unlikely cast of characters helped to inspire the latest album from the unstoppable Beyoncé. Odd Future’s Frank Ocean, Kanye West, and Jay-Z were three hip hop artists that Beyonce cited as influencers of 4 in an upcoming interview with Complex magazine.

“There are moments when I see his lips moving, and I can see lyrics floating above his head, and I think, ‘Wow! How did I get so lucky to be able to witness this level of genius so closely?’ she says of husband Jay-Z. But while he’s the obvious choice for Bey’s rap consumption, the singer’s direct connection to him affords her some exposure to some of rap’s newer talent. “Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn,” Beyonce says of Odd Future’s Frank Ocean. “I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling. I immediately reached out to him — literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record.” Ocean helped pen “I Miss You.”

Another collaboration on 4 inspired by Bey’s appreciation for rap was “Party,” produced by Kanye West. Bey admits to crying after hearing Kanye’s “Runaway.” She explains, “The fact that he’s belting out his pain, his confusion, and his anger, with no pre-written lyrics, was so moving.”

Though Beyoncé has stated in interviews that she was inspired by every genre of music, she’s clearly been touched by some of rap’s recent standouts. She adds, “I just want my legacy to be great music.”

when emotions set in

Hip-hop mogul Damon Dash has claimed that he had faith in Jay-Z from early on and always predicted that he would become one of the most famous rappers in the world.

Damon and Jay used to be best buddies back in the day when they co-founded Rocafella Records, however, their close relationship ended when they fell out. Jay subsequently became the president of Def Jam Records and Damon sold his share of Rocafella to Def Jam.

With the 15th anniversary of Jay's debut album 'Reasonable Doubt' approaching, Damon sat down with VH1 to talk about how he stuck with Jay even when people doubted his rapping abilities. "Because we believed in ['Reasonable Doubt'] so much, you couldn't even tell me that it wasn't going to be the best album that was ever made," Damon told VH1.

"I said 'he will be the greatest rapper of all time.' I said that 15 years ago not to put it all on me. It was a lot of fighting. It was at a time when people told me he was the worst rapper."

Despite no longer being friends, Damon explains that he and Jay will always have business ties. "No matter what, we're still in business together because, me, Biggs and Jay still own 'Reasonable Doubt.'"

i had passion for fashion when i didnt have it i closed my eyes in imagine

rapper-turned-fashion-maven Kanye was busy working on his first collection in Paris. If the latest from the rumour mill is to be believed, it shouldn't be too long before we get to see the fruits of his secretive labour.

jay was recently having listening sessions in ny while Kanye is busy working on a fashion range in Paris

Rumoured to have enlisted the talents of London knitwear designer Louise Goldin and Central Saint Martins MA course leader Professor Louise Wilson, the collection has the potential to be a celebrity success - something that's not easy to come by in the fashion industry

Together with his design experience at French label M/M, label-heavy wardrobe (see his Coachella performance in women's Céline spring/summer 2011) and clear dedication to research (the artist appeared at more shows during fashion month than your average magazine editor), we might just be in for a swag treat folks.

JZ CAPTURE THE MOMENT

Jay-Z captured baseball history on camera. The sports enthusiast filmed Yankees player Derek Jeter knocking his 3,000th hit out of the park at New York’s Yankee Stadium. The “Empire State of Mind” rapper was seated near third base and can be heard predicting the moment before it happened.

“I actually called it,” Jay told reporters after the game. “I called it for the wrong side though. I thought he was gonna hit the short porch [in right], but he surprised everyone.”

Jeter becomes the 28th player in major league history to reach the milestone. Watch the historic moment through Jay’s eyes.

Spike Lee To Direct Oldboy Remake? smh wow!

In what could be the most awesome revenge flick since Uma Thurman in a yellow jumpsuit, Spike Lee is reportedly in negotiations to direct the American remake of Oldboy. The move could revitalize both the career of a stalled director and the fate of a stalled adaptation.

Aside from documentaries, Lee has not made a feature film since 2008. Only weeks ago, he claimed in an interview that he is unable to get funding for even the most commercially safe projects, like a sequel to his hit Inside Man.

The original Korean version of Oldboy was an international hit and critical success in 2003. Based on a Japanese graphic novel, it followed the incredibly bloody path of a man released after 15 years of mysterious imprisonment, as he tracks down his family’s murderers.

Steven Spielberg was set to direct the American version with Will Smith starring when the proposed production hit legal troubles and was dropped in 2009. But the family-friendly duo had always seemed an odd match for the film.
