Spike Lee To Direct Oldboy Remake? smh wow!
In what could be the most awesome revenge flick since Uma Thurman in a yellow jumpsuit, Spike Lee is reportedly in negotiations to direct the American remake of Oldboy. The move could revitalize both the career of a stalled director and the fate of a stalled adaptation.
Aside from documentaries, Lee has not made a feature film since 2008. Only weeks ago, he claimed in an interview that he is unable to get funding for even the most commercially safe projects, like a sequel to his hit Inside Man.
The original Korean version of Oldboy was an international hit and critical success in 2003. Based on a Japanese graphic novel, it followed the incredibly bloody path of a man released after 15 years of mysterious imprisonment, as he tracks down his family’s murderers.
Steven Spielberg was set to direct the American version with Will Smith starring when the proposed production hit legal troubles and was dropped in 2009. But the family-friendly duo had always seemed an odd match for the film.
